Ash Ledge
My main goal when I went to Iceland was to photograph the volcanic eruption of Eyjafjallajökull. Fortunately, I was able to take a few trips to explore other parts of the country. On this particular day, there was a tremendous amount of volcanic ash in the air. This is a color photograph, but because of all the ash in the air and on the land, it looks monochromatic. This was one time I thought I might die taking a photograph. Right beyond this ledge, the drop so suddenly and so high up, there would have been no chance to survive the fall. When the camera is up to my eye, it is not uncommon for me to walk to get the right frame. Thank goodness I had a moment of clarity. I realized the danger in front of me,and dropped to my knees to prevent myself from walking off the ledge while photographing this scene. Iceland. May 2010.
