Synchronized Humpback Soundings
It was my fascination with whales that elevated my excitement to be on the look out for them. It was the season for them to be in Antarctica to feed. Thanks to the help of a young woman on staff who called herself a "whaler," she was always on the look out for whales and would announce when she spotted one. My camera was always nearby. When she spotted these two humpbacks, I ran to the deck to see them. Where there are krill, there are whales. The two whales were swimming around in different stages of breathing, sounding and eating. It was very exciting for me to see both whales simultaneously sound and raise their tales in the air as though they were synchronized swimmers. The sun was low in the sky and the golden light highlighted their flukes and the water dripping off their tails like waterfalls.
